The Motor Vehicle Mechanic I works under the direction of the Shop Foreman; is responsible for maintaining, rebuilding and overhauling major assemblies of City vehicles and related equipment.



1. Provides necessary tests, services and repairs of City vehicles and related equipment

1.1 Carries out preventive maintenance for all vehicles and mechanical equipment

1.2 Completes vehicle safety inspections necessary for licensing

1.3 Maintains assigned work orders, daily work schedules, and logs

1.4 Purchases parts and supplies used for vehicle maintenance, both for inventory maintenance and immediate use




Graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management or a closely related field, and two years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Must possess a valid state driver's license with CDL endorsement (including Tanker and Hazardous Materials endorsements) or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.

Must possess valid Utah State Vehicle Inspection Certificates for Light Duty passenger car, light truck, motorcycle and Heavy Duty truck, trailer and bus or have the ability to obtain prior to employment.


  1. Knowledge of the structure and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, vehicle electrical, hydraulic and general automobile systems; knowledge of automotive welding, fabrication and design.
  2. Skill in mechanics and proper repair procedures.
  3. Ability to maintain and carry out effective preventive maintenance programs for City owned vehicles and equipment; ability to diagnose motor vehicle problems; ability to troubleshoot using OBD (on-board diagnostics); ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
